The Power of Visual Story Telling

In the digital age, where attention spans are shorter than ever, capturing the interest of your audience is a constant challenge for businesses. It is where the power of visual storytelling comes into play. Visual elements, such as high-quality photography, can captivate and engage your target audience, making them a vital component of successful digital marketing campaigns. In this blog post, I will explore the importance of photography in enhancing your digital marketing efforts and how partnering with a reputable digital marketing agency or company can help you leverage the power of visual storytelling to its fullest potential.

The Impact of Visuals on Digital Marketing

In today’s visually-driven world, the significance of visuals in digital marketing cannot be overstated. Photography is crucial in capturing attention, evoking emotions, and conveying your brand’s story. Incorporating visually appealing images into your digital marketing campaigns helps create a solid first impression, encourages audience engagement, and ultimately drives conversions. A lot of my photo editing work comes from companies looking to digitally enhance their photos, to increase their appeal and drive sales.

Enhancing Brand Identity

Photography is an excellent tool for showcasing your brand’s identity and personality. You can establish a distinct visual identity that by large resonates with your target audience by using high-quality and consistent visuals. A digital marketing company with expertise in visual storytelling can help you create a cohesive and compelling brand image through captivating photography. It, in turn, fosters brand recognition, trust, and loyalty among your customers.

Creating Emotional Connections

Photography has a unique ability to evoke emotions and create powerful connections with your audience. Images that elicit emotions can leave a lasting impact on viewers and make your brand more memorable. Incorporating relevant and emotionally resonant visuals into your digital marketing campaigns can forge stronger connections with your target audience, enhancing brand loyalty and encouraging them to take desired actions.

Storytelling through Visuals

Every brand has a story to tell, and photography can be a powerful tool for storytelling. Compelling visuals can convey your brand’s narrative, values, and mission more effectively than text alone. When you work with a digital marketing agency that can comprehend the art of visual storytelling, you can effectively communicate your brand’s message and engage your audience on a deeper level.

Social Media Engagement and Share-ability

Social media platforms have become an integral part of any digital marketing strategy. Visual content, especially photography, performs exceptionally well on social media. Eye-catching images are more likely to be shared, liked, and commented on, extending the reach of your digital marketing campaigns. By leveraging photography in your social media marketing efforts, you can enhance engagement, increase brand exposure, and attract new followers and potential customers.

Optimising Website Performance

In addition to social media, incorporating photography into your website is crucial for optimising its performance. High-quality visuals can enhance the user experience, decrease the bounce rates, and increase the time spent on your website. They can also transform your website into something more visually appealing, helping to create a positive impression of your brand. A digital marketing agency can provide expertise in optimising your website’s photography, ensuring that it aligns with your branding, is optimised for fast loading times, and is responsive across different devices.

In conclusion, consider the power of visual storytelling in today’s digital marketing landscape. Photography plays a vital role in capturing attention, enhancing brand identity, creating emotional connections, and conveying your brand’s story. By partnering with a reputable digital marketing company, you can leverage the potential of photography to elevate your digital marketing campaigns, drive engagement, and achieve your business goals. So, embrace the power of visual storytelling and let your brand’s photography speak volumes about your unique story and offerings.

Retouching and upsizing photos from a GoPro. It is not every day a photo of yours is blown up to a staggering size onto a huge billboard. What was really astounding was that it was from a tiny GoPro camera.

Enlarging GoPro photos

the first thing you need to do with your GoPro, to even stand a chance of enlarging the photo. Is to make sure that you have the settings optimised. I have adjusted my GoPro settings to “Protune”, this is the equal of using “Raw” instead of “jpeg” in your camera. Protune is a setting in GoPro so that photos hold far more information than the Jpeg version. This is vital if you want to be enlarging your GoPro photo in photoshop. All the photos I took were also shot using the most neutral settings in the GoPro camera.

I find the standard GoPro colour settings a bit too vivid and sharp for my liking. I then retouched and toned the colours using Lightroom.

blowing up small pictures

The GoPro photo was used to promote the entire season (2017/2018) of concerts and events at the ADDA. The main auditorium in the province of Alicante -Spain. If you look at the banner. It is 43.5 by 5.6 metres in dimension. Which means the actual image I shot had been successfully retouched and enlarged to 7.5 by 5.6 metres. and is still clear and not distorted or pixelated.

What makes this even more surprising for me was that I took the photo using my using my GoPro Hero 4 black. I was on holiday in Formentera, one of the Balearic Islands (Spain).

While I was there, I took a few underwater holiday photos with my GoPro. I have included a few images of the trip. I particularly like the plunge my son made. Especially the composition of the anchor and the bubble trails he left behind when impacting the water.

an underwater Gopro photo using Protune

The slogan for the 2017/18 season was “Submerge Yourself in the Music”. Which explains why they used my photo.

The photo for the billboard before enlarging

Another great second camera I take with me is my trusty Panasonic Lumix FZ 2500. I used it to capture my son pictured below plunging into the sea.

My son diving into the sea

Enlarging GoPro photos. To achieve this, as mentioned before, adjust the camera to optimise the photos.

A friend once said to me “the best way to make money from photography is to sell your camera!” Welcome to photography in the digital age! Can you survive as …

A friend once said to me “the best way to make money from photography is to sell your camera!” Welcome to photography in the digital age!

Can you survive as a photographer? A lot of photographic colleagues I know are all saying how difficult it is to make a living in the digital era. It seems the digital camera has caused an explosion of so called professional photographers. They buy a camera, set up a website, fill it with Istock photos and they are off!

As a photo retoucher, I get to see the fruits of their work, especially “The Wedding Photos From Hell”. The digital photographic age for me in some ways is a blessing, I get so many wedding retouches to do, to try and add some sparkle to what is supposed to be one of the most memorable days…..

But I digress, this blog post is not about photo retouching and restoration. More it is about photography, and how to survive in this fiercely competitive market. I mean how do you compete with “Free?” I kid you not, living in London a few years ago. It amazed me to see the amount of adverts by photographers who were willing to do wedding photography for free. To add to their portfolio. Well the first mistake is to offer low prices. You will always look like you lack skill or confidence. in fact quite often people would rather pay more, for that idea that they are getting quality.

I read a blog by a photographer once (a successful one). Who said he had enough of doing boring formulaic wedding photography. He wanted out of that market so he raised his prices . Now he is inundated with wedding photography bookings. Actually he is quite happy now. As he can be selective of when he works as he is earning a decent amount per wedding photography session.

Start off by having a decent serviced and working camera. Get a website or a blog. Where you can showcase your work. Make sure the website or blog is clear in layout, you will not believe how impatient some web surfers are.

Social networking is vital, create an online presence. Look for people in the same field as you and try and connect with them via all the usual suspects. Create an Instagram account and add your pics.

I do not even have to say, but you need to know how to take good pictures. You need to be technically savvy to be able to adapt to changing circumstances (lighting, exposure etc). Try to create a unique style, one which people can start identifying a certain type of image to you. For example, depth of field (I like shallow depths), perspective – create a unique perspective.

Learn at least how to do some basic photo retouching work. You will not believe how grateful a client will be if you have at least removed the dust from the images (the curse of the Digital DSLR). Here is a link to download a PDF highlighting various types of photo editing. I suggest at least checking out the basic retouch example. That is quick and easy to learn. I had a photoshoot for Total 911 once (yes I am not only a photo retoucher). They asked for Raw photos (unedited). but I actually sent retouched and toned photos instead. I did have the originals on standby to send. But got a reply back from the client, that they loved the photos and were going with them.

Total 911 photoshoot of a restored Porsche 911 Targa

I know it is difficult to survive as a photographer in the digital age. But if you really love photography, keep trying. Keep pushing yourself and most importantly, when you get the chance, give the client something to remember you by.
